How To Genlock RED for 3D

Here is a little information I’ve collected on how to sync up (genlock) two RED cameras- if anyone has any suggestions for revision, feel free to leave a comment and it will be updated.

(note this is confirmed to work on BUILD 21)

AJA Gen10 (runs around $320 on the B&H website)

You need a tri-level sync generator (AJA GEN10 recommended by REDUSER members), Build 21, BNC to DIN 1.0/2.3, and (2) Red Cameras

1) Enable GENLOCK which is located in the sensor -> shutter menu shown below.

You can find GENLOCK in the SENSOR menu

Connect a lead to a tri-level sync source (such as a Lockit or AJA Gen10). The camera has a DIN 1.0 /2.3 connector – you will need an adapter lead to BNC.

GENLOCK INPUT (E) is located on the right side of the RED body

When operating at 23.98, 24.00, 25.00 or 29.97 Project Time Bases, set the genlock  box to the same frame rate as the project TIME BASE. Do not use PsF or interlaced signals.

If everything is working, a genlock icon (padlock) should appear in the top of the GUI (graphic user interface).

Defining Parallaxes

Here is a parallax chart I put together.

I used stills from the 1935 anaglyph short Audioscopiks, which was nominated for an academy award at the time for its innovation. Although there are charts out there that are available, I wanted to make one with clear visuals and anaglyph examples (in case one views this blog with anaglyph glasses which can be purchased here). Until some new monitors come out- anaglyph (red/blue) images will be the cheapest way to try to convey effects for educational purposes on this blog.
